Tourist BusThe 19-day Manaslu Tsum Valley trek is one of the amazing and adventurous things to do in Nepal. It takes the trekker close to the world’s eighth-highest peak, Manaslu (8,163 m), along with the sacred and mystical, Tsum region.
The trek is perfect for those seeking both authenticity and adventure, offering remote Tibetan-influenced villages, ancient monasteries, sightings of wildlife, breathtaking scenery and warmth and gracious hospitality of the local people.
It was one of the restricted regions of Nepal. Since the beginning of 2008, it was open for the trekker’s. It was less touched and spiritually rich trekking region of Nepal.
Throughout the Manaslu Tsum Valley trek, you’ll be able to witness the magical views of several peaks including Ganesh Himal (7,422 m), Himalchuli (7,893 m), Siringi (7,187 m), Ngada Chuli (7,871 m), Bouddha Himal (6,672 m), and Mount Manaslu (8,163 m). Furthermore, we will also cross the Larkya La Pass (5,160 m) – the challenging and picturesque mountain pass in Nepal.
The 19-day journey begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Soti Khola, the trail follows the Budi Gandaki River, passing through the diverse landscapes, rhododendron forest, a suspension bridge and gradual ascents lead to the Buddhist villages.
Each place of the TSUM valley – Jagat, Lokpa, Cumling, Chokkangaparo and Nile showcases the cultural immersion with their chortens, gompas, and monasteries, prayer flags that are unspoiled by modernism. The Milarepa Phu Cave is a sacred and spiritual pilgrimage site that leads you to devotion. Subsequently, on the next day, we’ll reach the highest point of the Tsum Valley, Mu Gompa (3,700 m), a sacred monastery, close to the Tibetan border.
After exploring the TSUM Valley, we will head towards the Manaslu Circuit ranges. Our trek continues visiting and admiring the elegant villages including – Deng, Namrung, Sama Gaon, Dharamshala and finally the Larkya La Pass (5,160 m). It offers impeccable views of the surrounding Himalayas and glacial valleys. Then we descend to Bhimthang, Gho, till following the dense forest, alpine meadows, diverse landscape till our trek comes to an end at Tal. As the journey continues, a scenic drive to Besihar till our journey concluded at Kathmandu.
Manaslu TSUM Valley trek is a peaceful, calm and serene journey compared to EBC and Annapurna treks. We, the 3A Adventure, offer our customers a crafted itinerary that gives them a flawless and unforgettable experience throughout the journey.
Today is the first day of the Manaslu and Tsum trek. After taking an early morning breakfast, we’ll take a private jeep/car and drive to our first destination. It covers a distance of 140-150, which will be covered in 7 to 8 hrs, depending on the season and road conditions.
We’ll enjoy the scenic views passing the Prithvi Highway, along with terraced fields and a rural village. After Dadhing Besi settlement, the road becomes narrower and rough till we reach Auraghat.
Thereafter, we’ll have a final stretch to Soti Khola. We have a night stay and a delicious dinner here.

The trek from Soti Khola to Maccha Khola is the first walking day of the Manaslu & Tsum Valley trek, covering a distance of 15 km in 6-7 hrs and gaining 160 meters elevation.
We’ll cross the suspension bridge from the Sotikhola. Upon walking through the Sal forest and terraced fields, you’ll pass Khursane – an elegant settlement.
We’ll trek through a traditional Gurung village, Lububesi and follow the Budhi Gandaki River. After crossing small streams and some short ridges, we’ll finally reach Maccha Khola. Overnight stay and dinner at the tea house.

The trek from Maccha Khola to Jagat is a significant portion of the Manslu and Tsum Valley trek, covering a 10-12 km distance in 5-6 hrs with an elevation gain of 510 meters.
Our trail continues through the Budhi Gandaki River, gradually ascending through terraced fields and small villages. Leaving behind Maccha Khola, we’ll reach Korlabesi and Tatopani – famous for natural hot springs.
Then, we’ll walk through rhododendron and dense forest. Thereafter, we’ll have some steep ascents and descents along with staircases before reaching Jagat.

The trek from Jagat to Lokpa is a moderate hike, covering 8-9 km and taking 6-7 hours to complete, with an elevation gain of 640 meters.
Leaving behind the Jagat, the trail takes us through the Budhi Gandaki River. Then we pass through the pine and rhododendron forests in a serene atmosphere.

Thereafter, we’ll head upwards to EkleBhatti, and then you set our steps at Lokpa – the first village of the TSUM valley. From here, you’ll have a spectacular view of Himalchuli and Bouddha Himal.

The journey from Lokpa to Chumling is a scenic trek that will be covered in 4-5 hrs. With the elevation gains of 346 meters, the trails take us through pine and rhododendron forests.
Soon after that, we’ll have beautiful views of distant snow-capped peaks.
As you approach to our day 5th destination, the atmosphere will more serene and peaceful. We’ll also see several traditional Gumba, monasteries and chortens. It is the premier place for a night’s stay and an appetising meal.

Today, we’ll enter the upper valley of the Tsum region in the inner Himalayas. Leaving the peaceful village Chumling, we’ll cross a suspension bridge that takes us to one of the largest settlements of Tsum Valley – Domje.
After taking rest here, our trail continues through Rainjam and Gho village. From here, we’ll have an incredible view of Ganesh Himal.
Thereafter, we have narrow uphill climbing to reach Chokkangparo. Here, you will get a golden opportunity to enjoy the warm hospitality of locals with their dishes – Tsombo and Tibetan tea (butter chiya).

Today, we walk a comparatively shorter distance. Chhule, the final village in the north upper Tsum Valley, is about a 20-minute walk across from the Nile, on the western side of the Shikhar Khola. Because the area is fertile, you can view people farming when you go to Ngakyu Leru.
You will arrive at St. Milarepa Piren Phu Cave, where his footprint preserved in rock, after passing Lamagaon. One of the Tsum Valley’s holiest caverns is Piren Phu, also known as Pigeon Cave.
The cave is connected to two distinct Gumbas. Piren Phu Cave is one of the valley’s most important socio-cultural treasures because of its richly painted Buddhist murals, substantial Buddhist paper scripts, lengthy prayer flags, and superb artistic scripts carved on stones. After that, we traverse a suspension bridge across the Shiar River and proceed through a number of villages before reaching Nile.

The trek from the Nile to Mu Gompa is a short but most memorable and significant part of the TSUM Valley and Manaslu Circuit journey.
We’ll have a short 3-4 hours of hike to Mu Gompa (3,700 m) – the highest point and remotest part of the TSUM valley.
After leaving the Nile, we follow the Shair Khola into the deeper valley. While walking, we’ll have spectacular views of the mountain and hills. Lately, we’ll pass the mani walls with the high-altitude grazing yaks.
After reaching here, we will all be glad to see the elegant and beautiful Mu Gompa – a monastery established in 1936.

After a pleasant night at Mu Gompa, we will descend to the TSUM valley. We’ll follow the yak pastures, diverse landscapes and traditional Buddhist settlements.
After a couple of hours of the descent, we will reach Rachen Gompa. After resting here for a while, we’ll continue our journey and trek down the TSUM valley to reach Chokkang Paro.
We’ll again follow a forested area terraced field and farmlands. Along the way, you will see a Tibetan-style stone-paved house as well before reaching Chokkang Paro.

The trek from Chokkangparo to Chumling is a significant part of the trek. We mostly have downhill walking, covering around 10-12 km in 6-7 hrs.
After having an early morning breakfast, we descend to the alpine meadows in the lower valley. Lately, we’ve passed through the Buddhist villages, admiring the mani walls and chortens.
During the trek, we’ll have scenic views of Ganesh Himal. As you descend, you will go through rhododendron and pine forests before arriving at Chumling.

The trek from Chumling to Deng is typically a longer descent day. It takes 6-7 hours as you leave Tsum and re-joins Manaslu. We will have an elevation loss of 526 meters.
After leaving the Chumling, we’ll pass through a lush forest before crossing the suspension bridge. You will have a downhill hike along with the rugged terrains and rocky paths before reaching the Lokpa village. Similarly, we will descend to the Syar and Budi Gandaki River before reaching the Philim.
Thereafter, there is an easy trek from Philim to Eklebhatti. Upon that, you will cross the suspension bridge to reach the Deng.

The trek from Deng to Namrung covers the distance of 22-23 kilometers with an elevation gain of 1040 meters. It takes around 6-7 hrs to complete the twelfth day trek.
After leaving Deng, we will ascend towards Rana, a charming small settlement, and then Bhipedhi. The trek offers flawless views of mountains and landscapes before reaching the Ghap.
From here, we’ll have gradual ascents passing through the rhododendron and pine forests. Upon crossing a small suspension bridge, we will finally reach Namrung .

It will be a strenuous and rewarding day for us. Today, we’ll have a walk of 8-9 hrs.
Leaving Namrung, we’ll gradually ascend through rhododendron and oak forests, passing some elegant villages. Before approaching Lho, we’ll have the spontaneous views of the Himalchui, Ganesh and Manaslu mountains.
Upon that, we’ll walk through the yak pastures, grazing fields and glacial streams. During our journey, we’ll also be able to learn the lifestyle and culture of Tibetan Buddhists.
Before the sun goes down, we’ll reach Sama Gaon and reside at the tea house. The Tibetan border is quite close from here.

Today is the acclimatisation day of our Manaslu Circuit with the TSUM Valley trek. We’ll take a rest and relax our body and feet at Samagaun.
After resting for some hours, you ’ll also have several activity options. We may hike to beautiful glacial Lake Birendra near Samagaun.
The eighth-tallest mountain base camp, Mount Manaslu which has an elevation of 4,800 meters, is quite accessible from this village.
We may also visit the Pun Gyen Gompa. It is one of the oldest monasteries that offer incredible views. Further, it is rich in culture and history.

The trek from Sama Gaun is an important portion of the Manaslu trek. We will cover the distance of 15-16 km, within 5-6 hrs.
The trek continues, and the hike takes us through the terraced fields alongside the mani walls, following the Budhi Gandaki valley till we reach Samdo.
From here, we’ll have the steady ascent to reach Larkya La Phedi. At the beginning, we’ll go through Atharya and the Lark River. During the glimpses of the Larkya La glacier, it will be flawless. Upon that, the trails take us along the Salka Khola valley and finally ascend to the paved stone guest house known as Dharamsala.

Today is the most significant day of our Manaslu and Tsum valley journey. It is going to be challenging but equally flawless.
We’ll start early to pass the magnificent Larkya La Pass (5,160 meters), the highest point of the Manaslu Circuit.
Initially, we pass through moraines and small lakes that remain frozen all time. Then we’ll follow the rugged and icy terrains and a path covered with snow to reach Larkya La.
From Larkya La, you’ll have the magical views of Mt. Manaslu, Annapurna, Himlung, Kang Guru, Annapurna II, Gyaji Kung and Cheo Himal.
After staying some time and making unforgettable memories, we’ll trek down to Bhimtang, which takes around 4-5 hrs from here. After reaching tea house, we’ll share our experience with the fellow trekker’s.

Following 4-5 hours of walking, we’ll arrive at the Gho. Here we will take a rest at the comfortable tea house.

In the morning, we wake up early, and we ride in a local jeep or bus to reach Besisahar. We need to reach Besisahar by 3 pm to catch the last vehicle to Kathmandu.

The TSUM valley with the Manaslu Circuit trek is the most elegant and less commercialised trek. It combines the remote beauty of the Tsum Valley with the classic routes of the Manaslu region. This trekking route has been open for tourists since 2008. In a short time, it gained a huge number of visitors.
The 19 days of trek offer you stunning scenery, cultural immersion, a sacred journey and mental resilience. Throughout the journey, you’ll have the breathtaking views of sky-touching peaks like Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, Siringi Himal, Ngada Chuli, Bouddha Himal, crossing Larkya La Pass and close encounter with the Mount Manaslu
All through the journey, you witness the lifestyle and culture of the Gurung, Tibetan and Nubri communities. Furthermore, you’ll also get a chance to explore the oldest and ancient monastery – Mu Gompa and Rachen Gompa.
During the journey, you have the possible sightings of Himalayan black bear, musk deer, Tahr, and snow leopards if lucky. Furthermore, the rhododendrons blooming, dense forest, beautiful glacier, and alpine meadows make your journey memorable and flawless.
The trek is less visited and offers you an off-beaten path. The TSUM and Manaslu are less modest but more peaceful compared to EBC & Annapurna.
Tsum Valley with the Manaslu Circuit trek is a moderate to strenuous journey. This trek is not a casual stroll. It demands excellent physical fitness with prior experience to accomplish the 19 days trek.
The length and the duration are the main challenges. It takes around 19 days. Furthermore, the long walking hours are approximately 6-7 hours on average. Some days, it also exceeds 8 hrs.
The highest point of the trek is Larkya La Pass (5,160 m), where there is lower oxygen. It results in several health problems. The TSUM Valley itself has reached above 3,700 meters. Therefore, there is a high chance of altitude sickness.
The trails are not managed properly. It involves steep ascents and descents, rocky and rugged terrain. Sometimes, due to the heavy rain, the level increases and becomes impassable.
The weather is unpredictable and unstable even at the lower altitudes of the TSUM valley. The temperature ranges from -8 to -15 degrees at higher altitudes. Further, sudden storms may also affect our walking trails.
There is no access to a proper road in this core section; in case of an emergency, evacuation can be slow.
Compared to Annapurna and EBC, the lodges and tea houses provide you with minimal facilities. There are limited choices of food. Additionally, there is limited electricity and internet.
Despite these hindrances, the Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley is one of the most liked trekking routes in Nepal. Remember, you must have excellent fitness and mental resilience to accomplish the journey.
The Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit is one of the most admirable treks. It takes the trekkers above 5,100 meters. The trek is challenging. For that reason, you need proper planning & preparations to conclude the trek. Your planning includes: physical, mental and logistics.
To make your journey easy & convenient, you must have excellent fitness. Further, you may be involved in cardio exercises like cycling, swimming, and running at least 2-3 months before the trip.
The strength training – squats, lunges and planks is equally significant. You may also take part in hiking training. It would be helpful to enhance your stamina and vital body power.
Your mental health is equally significant during the journey. A practice of Yoga and meditation leads you to a peaceful and pleasant hike. Keep your mindset to live with limited facilities and no luxury for a few weeks.
Prepare and ready all your gear and equipment before starting the trek. Furthermore, ensure that you have travel insurance for a hassle-free journey.
Altitude Sickness is a condition when your body doesn’t adjust to the lower oxygen at higher elevations.
On the Manaslu Circuit trek and the TSUM valley, trekkers go above 5,100 meters; as a result, the body doesn’t get sufficient oxygen.
It affects anyone regardless of good fitness, age and trekking experiences.
Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, loss of appetite, and shortness of breath are some of the very common symptoms that trekkers have to face.
It also leads to some complexities – Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), High Altitude Cerebral Oedema (HACE) and High-Altitude Pulmonary Oedema (HAPE).
To minimise the risk of altitude sickness, we have acclimatised and rested during our journey. It is necessary to adapt and adjust to the high altitude and changing environments while you are trekking.
Here are some essential preventive measures that are helpful for trekkers.
Gradual Ascent: Schedule your acclimatisation and give priority to the gradual ascents. Be steady and don’t be in a hurry.
Stay Hydrated: Stay hydrated and drink at least 3-4 litres of water every day.
Alcohol & Tobacco – Avoid consuming alcohol, cigarettes, and chewing tobacco during the journey
Medication –Consume the Diamox, aka Acetazolamide, 1-2 days before the trek.
Listen to your body – Never ignore any health symptoms you feel during the journey.
Conscious: Be conscious of your health. If you feel you can’t, then kindly avoid the trek.
Remember, consult your doctor and have some tests before starting the trek.
The Manaslu Circuit with the Tsum Valley is generally considered a moderate to strenuous trek, but it is possible for beginners with adequate and proper planning.
It‘s not like strolling in the streets. Tsum Valley & Manalsu trek is 19-day of journey. Furthermore, the trek reaches above 5,000 meters, which can be more demanding and challenging for the trekkers.
The beginner’s success largely depends on physical preparation, mental resilience, gradual ascents and proper acclimatization. You must have the ability to walk 6-8 hours a day, navigating rugged terrain, including uphill and downhill walking.
Beginners must be ready to survive in the remote conditions with limited facilities and unpredictable weather. To make the journey effective, it is advisable to incorporate cardiovascular exercises, such as swimming, running, and jogging, for at least 2 months before the trek. You may also walk with a 6-7 kilogram backpack. Hiring an experienced guide is very important for your comfort and safety.
If you are motivated and passionate about high-altitude trekking, then the Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley is a feasible option
Nepal has four seasons named autumn, Spring, Winter and Monsoon.
Autumn (Sep-Nov) – Autumn is the first choice of trekkers for the TSUM valley with the Manaslu Circuit trek.
This is the peak season for trekking due to the clear skies, perfect weather and fantastic mountains views.
Further, you may also enjoy the Nepalese major festivals: Dashain Chhath and Tihar. It is the busiest season, though it is less crowded and more peaceful than the Annapurna and EBC treks.
Spring (March-May) – Spring is another great season for the Tsum Valley, particularly when combined with the Manaslu Circuit trek. During the journey, you will be glad to see blossoming rhododendrons.
There will be long daylight hours with mild temperatures. There is a chance to encounter wildlife and bird watching along the routes. Furthermore, it is also a promising time for bird watching and enjoying the Buddhist festivals – Lhosar and Buddha Jayanti.
Winter (Dec-Feb) – The Tsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit adventure is possible, but it comes with its own set of challenges and obstacles. There are cold temperatures, shorter days and poor visibility due to the fog.
During this season, the skies are clear, and you will get a clear and crisp view of snow-capped mountains. This season is rewarding for highly experienced trekkers, and proper preparations are required.
Monsoon (June-August) – The monsoon is the last best option among the four seasons. This season brings heavy rainfall everywhere. As a result, there are high chances of mudflows from upper valley, landslides and floods.
The heavy rain leads to the leeches in the lower valley, and low visibility and road blockage may spoil the journey. Due to the heavy rain, the level increases and becomes impassable
While staying in Kathmandu, you’ll find a convenient and luxurious hotel with all the facilities. After the trek starts, you will stay in tea houses, lodges, guest houses, and sometimes homestays.
When you are in the TSUM valley region, we’ll have twin-sharing bedrooms with a mattress. The blankets are provided. However, you may take your warm sleeping bags.
There is no attached bathroom. You mostly have to use squat toilets. Hot water is limited. You have to pay a certain amount for it.
There is a common solar power. However, you have to pay for mobile and gadget charging.
You’ll get more comfortable in the Manaslu region compared to the Tsum Valley. You won’t get an attached bathroom, but the toilets are improved with the flush systems. There is availability of a hot shower with a small fee.
You may not have to pay for gadgets and mobile charging at Samagaun, Samdo and Namrung.
In essence, the Manaslu Circuit region provides you with more comfortable accommodations than Tsum valley.
We’ll provide simply prepared, local and healthy foods during the Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit trek. The foods will be served in tea houses, lodges or while you are travelling. While the variety is limited compared to Annapurna and Everest, you’ll still have several options.
Breakfast (the energizer meal) – The early morning breakfast plays a crucial role for the trekker. You may enjoy several blends of taste that include: Bread dishes, oatmeal, muesli, porridge, pancakes, chapatti, hot drinks (Varieties of tea, coffee, hot lemon and other drinks)
Lunch (the power meal) – By considering the popular Nepali saying “Dal Bhat ko Power” 24 hours a day, we’ll serve you Rice, Lentils, & Seasonal Vegetables. Furthermore, you may also enjoy other dishes that include: Chapatti, veggies, lentils, Mo: Mo (dumplings), Rice Pudding, Apple Pie and more.
Dinner (the comfortable meal) – The trekker usually prefers the same Dal, Bhat, Tarkari for dinner. Along with that, you may also enjoy chicken and mutton curry (available in the lower valley). To trek the Manaslu Circuit with TSUM valley, you need certain permits and follow the specific rules.
Restricted Area Permit (RAP) – Manaslu – This permit is necessary ass you are travelling through Jagat and Samagon. It costs around $100 per person for first 7 days (Sept-Nov), and $ 75 (Dec-Aug). After the first seven days, you have to pay 15 USD per day.
Restricted Area Permit (RAP) – TSUM – This permit is necessary to enter in the Lokpa, Chumling, Mu Gompa and other settlements. It costs around $40 per week (Sep-Nov), $30 per week (Dec-Aug). The extension charge is $7 per day after a week.
Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP): This permit is essential to land your steps in the Manaslu Conservation Area. It costs 3000 NPR person.
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): This permit is necessary for your exit route from Tal to Besisahar. It costs around 3000 per head.

During the Manaslu Circuit with the TSUM Valley trek, you should prepare to pay for the hot shower (4 to 6 USD), gadget charging and WI-FI. In the lower valley, it may be free. However, in the remote and Upper valley, you are liable to pay for it. If you forget equipment like crampons, poles, sleeping bags, head lamp or any other gear, expect to buy or rent in Kathmandu.
You have to buy yourself your medical supplies like Diamox, First Aid kit, oral solutions, wet wipes or tissues.
Tipping the guide and porter is not mandatory. However, we recommend that you pay them a certain amount daily or after the trip concludes.

The journey from Kathmandu to Soti Khola and back from Tal to Kathmandu via Besisahar will be shared by a public bus or public vehicles, depending on the size of our trek members.

The Manaslu Tsum Valley is a strenuous to moderate high-altitude trek. It takes around 19 days to complete. An excellent level of fitness is required.
You need to submit the following documents: A copy of your passport, 3-4 passport-size photos, Details of the flights, and a copy of the travel insurance.
As we know, it is a remote trek. There are no ATM centres or money exchange counters. However, it is easily available in Kathmandu.
No, this trek is not so suitable for beginners. But it is possible. You need proper preparations before the trek. Further, your physical and mental health equally matter.
Remember, Manaslu and TSUM valley is are restricted areas; so solo trekking is completely prohibited.

Yes, you need a porter and guide. A porter can carry 20-25 kg of bags. Furthermore, guides navigate you through the trek. They also have in-depth knowledge of the destinations.

During the journey, the trekker lives in the tea house. They will provide twin sharing with shared bathrooms.
